Gilbert Miller Jr

December 24, 1962 — September 4, 2026

Gilbert Miller Jr., a Christian and proud native Texan, was born in Marfa on Christmas Eve, 1962. The on-call doctor was drunk on this particular holiday and Gilbert Sr. had to help with the delivery. The family was resident in Marfa at the time. They later moved to Austin where young Gilbert spent his formative years. They later moved to Odessa where Gilbert graduated from Odessa High School in 1981. He attended Odessa College and then Texas Tech where he graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering. He worked for many years as a well-logging engineer for Wedge Wireline Service and then Baker Hughes. He was proud to work in the oil field and to be part of its West Texas culture. Later, Gilbert moved to Sonora and worked for the City as a waste water treatment operator. He loved boating, fishing, and DIY projects. A true engineer, he could work on anything – cars, boats, musical equipment, welding projects, etc. – and was good at most of it. He loved to play music and sing songs and was self-taught on many musical instruments, including guitar, keyboard, harmonica, and some banjo and fiddle. He was proud of the fact that one of his direct ancestors, Samuel Joseph Miller, was one of the discoverers of San Solomon Springs at what is now Balmorhea State Park. Gilbert was an active member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Sonora and served on the Bereavement Committee and in the choir. Gilbert died peacefully at home on September 4th from complications related to lymphoma.

He is preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Sr., and his mother, Juanita C. Miller.

He leaves behind two sisters Yvette Rodriquez (husband Simon), and Myra Abila (husband Michael), nephews Steven Rodriguez(wife Jacqui), Jerred Rodriguez (wife Britnee), Jace and Ryland Abila, niece Tarah Burrell (husband Derek), great nieces Marlie Guyton and Esmia Burrell and great nephew Jamauri Guyton.
